Nabhi Basti (Chakra Basti) Therapy in Sydney
A Traditional Ayurvedic Therapy for Digestive Balance and Core Wellbeing
Nabhi Basti, also known as Chakra Basti or Navel Basti, is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that focuses on the navel (umbilical) region. In Ayurveda, the navel area—known as Nabhi—is regarded as an important centre connected with digestion, energy balance, and overall vitality.
At Ayur Healthcare, Parramatta, we offer Nabhi Basti as part of our holistic Ayurvedic wellness therapies, following classical Ayurvedic principles and traditional techniques.
What is Nabhi Basti (Chakra Basti)?
The term Chakra Basti comes from two Sanskrit words:
Chakra, meaning wheel or centre
Basti, meaning to retain or hold
In this therapy, warm medicated oil or ghee is gently retained over the navel area using a specially prepared herbal dough ring. In Ayurvedic texts, the navel is described as a Marma (vital point), where different tissues such as muscles, nerves, vessels, and joints are interconnected.
How Nabhi Basti is Performed
The therapy is carried out by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner in a calm and comfortable setting:
The practitioner first assesses your general health and Ayurvedic body constitution
A suitable herbal oil or medicated ghee is selected based on traditional Ayurvedic principles
You lie comfortably on your back
A ring made from black gram flour dough is placed over the navel area
Lukewarm oil or ghee is gently poured into the dough ring and retained for a specific duration
The temperature of the oil is carefully monitored throughout the session
This process is designed to be relaxing, soothing, and deeply nurturing.
Traditional Ayurvedic Perspective and Benefits
According to Ayurveda, Nabhi Basti is traditionally associated with supporting the body’s Agni (digestive fire) and promoting balance within the abdominal region.
Traditionally, this therapy is described as supporting:
Digestive comfort and regularity
Abdominal relaxation and ease
Nervous system calming through the solar plexus area
A sense of grounding and emotional balance
Overall wellbeing and vitality
Please note that these descriptions are based on traditional Ayurvedic knowledge and are not intended to replace medical advice.
Digestive Fire (Agni) in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, Agni refers to the digestive and metabolic fire responsible for transforming food into energy and nourishment. Balanced Agni is considered essential for maintaining overall health and wellbeing.
Ayurvedic therapies such as Nabhi Basti are traditionally used to support this balance as part of a broader lifestyle and wellness approach.
