Ayurvedic Lifestyle Guidelines For a Healthy Life

The daily regimen and good conduct are parts of correct/ideal Lifestyle measures mentioned in Ayurvedic classics for maintenance of health and also to achieve a long-life span, healthy active life, providing relief from pain and disease, and for the prevention of lifestyle-related disorders. A detailed explanation of personal hygiene, diet, and food-related rules and regimen during the daily routine, and behavioral, rules of good conduct, and description of suppressible & no suppressible urges is described in Ayurveda.

Avoid those factors which cause mental agony: -It isn’t what you eat that kills you; it’s what eats you (negative thoughts) that kills you. There are a number of scientific studies, both prospective and retrospective, that have shown a close cause-effect relationship between negative thoughts like anger, pride, hostility, and depression, and vascular diseases!

Dinacharya (Daily regimen)

• It’s advisable to get up during Brahma Muhurta (preferably between 4.00 a.m. to 5.30 a.m.).

• One should attend nature’s calls.

• The soft brushes made out of twigs of Khadira(catechu), Karanja(Pongamia pinnata), etc. should be used for brushing the teeth.

• Tongue should be cleaned by a long flexible strip of metal or plant twig. It cleanses the tongue and also stimulates the digestive fire. The mouth should even be cleaned properly.

Betel Leaf

• Chewing of betel leaves with small pieces of areca nut (Khadira) and aromatic substances like cardamom, cloves, refreshes the mouth and enhances digestion.

• It’s necessary to massage the whole body with oil daily. Oil massage ensures softness and unctuousness of skin, free movement of joints and muscles, peripheral circulation, and elimination of metabolic wastes.

• Regular exercise is important for perfect health. It builds up stamina and resistance against disease, clears the channels of the body, and increases blood circulation. It enhances the efficiency of body organs, promotes appetite and digestion, and prevents obesity.

• Whole-body Ayurveda massage in Sydney with dry powders of yava(barley), kola & kulath (Udvartana) on a daily basis.

• Bathing improves enthusiasm, strength, sexual vigor, appetite, a span of life and removes sweat and other impurities from the body. After the bath one should wear clean clothes and smear the body with perfume.

• One should have regular shaving, haircut, cutting of nails, etc.

Sadvritta (Rules of good conduct)

Ayurveda explains certain rules for maintaining a healthy mind. These are principles of right conduct that are applicable to all or any people at all times and places. Practicing them gives balance and harmony to the mind. These are

•Always paying gratitude to god, to the wise, and to respectable or elderly individuals.

• Always speak the truth

• Don’t lose your temper under any circumstances

• Don’t get addicted to sensory pleasures.

• Don’t harm anyone.

• As far as possible, don’t expose yourself to hardships.

• Try and control your passions.

• Endeavour to talk pleasant and sweet words.

• Meditate a day for the tranquillity of mind.

• Observe cleanliness altogether.

• Be patient and Observe self-control.

• Try to spread knowledge, give good advice, and help to others.

• Be straightforward and kind.

• Avoid irregularity in daily activities.

• Avoid overeating, over-drinking, an excessive amount of sexual activity, an excessive amount of or insufficient sleep.

• Behave per the time and place where you’re residing.

• Control your sense organs.

Non-Suppressible Urges and Suppressible Urges (Preventive Regimens) 

Follow the rules given by Ayurveda to ensure physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.


Non-Suppressible Urges

There are thirteen natural urges. Suppression of which results in many diseases as given below:

• Suppression of urge for urination results in difficulty in passing urine, urinary stone, atony of bladder, and inflammation of urinary tract.

• Suppression of urge for passing stool results in pain in the abdomen, indigestion, gas in abdomen, headache.

• Suppression of flatus results in pain in the abdomen, indigestion, heart diseases, constipation, or diarrhea.

• Suppression of ejaculation of semen may produce a stone (Spermato-lith), pain in testis, and difficulty in intercourse.

• Suppression of vomiting produces different kinds of diseases like urticaria, giddiness, anemia, hyperacidity, skin diseases, and fever.

• Suppression of sneezing may produce rhinitis and chronic cold, headache, sinusitis, and diseases of the respiratory system.

• Suppression of eructation results in hiccough, pain in the chest, cough, and anorexia.

• Suppression of yawning results in diseases of the eyes, throat, ear, and nose.

• Suppression of hunger and thirst may cause nutritional disorders and debility.

• Suppression of tears results in mental disorders, pain in the chest, giddiness, and digestive disorders.

• Suppression of respiration may cause suffocation, respiratory disorders, and even heart diseases.

• Suppression of sleep causes insomnia, mental disorders, digestive disorders, and diseases of sense organs.

Suppressible Urges

One should suppress urges of greed, grief, fear, fury, pride, shamelessness, envy, and excessive passion. Observe self-control and always speak the truth. One shouldn’t harm others and will always act in a courteous and polite manner.

• Dietetic and behavioral bad habits should be given up and good things should be taken up gradually. An intelligent one that seeks happiness should make a good effort to stay with good company and avoid the bad ones.
