Netra Basti (Akshi Tarpana) Therapy in Parramatta, Sydney

A Traditional Ayurvedic Eye Wellness Therapy

Netra Basti, also known as Akshi Tarpana, is a traditional Ayurvedic wellness therapy that focuses on the eye area. At Ayur Healthcare, Parramatta, this therapy is offered in accordance with classical Ayurvedic principles as part of a holistic approach to eye comfort, relaxation, and overall wellbeing.

The term Akshi refers to the eyes, while Tarpana means nourishment or soothing. This therapy has been traditionally used in Ayurveda to support eye comfort and relaxation.

Understanding Netra Basti from an Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, the eyes are considered an important sensory organ closely connected to lifestyle, daily habits, and mental focus. Prolonged screen use, reading, driving, and visual concentration may contribute to feelings of eye fatigue or discomfort.

Netra Basti is traditionally used to provide gentle nourishment and relaxation to the eyes, helping to support comfort and ease as part of an overall wellness routine.

What Is Netra Basti (Akshi Tarpana)?

Netra Basti involves the careful retention of warm, herbalised ghee around the eyes for a short, supervised period. The therapy is performed by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner in a calm and controlled environment.

This is a traditional Ayurvedic wellness practice, not a medical or ophthalmic treatment.

How the Netra Basti Procedure Is Performed

The procedure is carried out with close attention to comfort and safety:

  • You are positioned comfortably lying on your back with adequate head and neck support

  • A soft dough ring is gently formed around the eyes using black gram flour

  • Lukewarm medicated ghee is carefully poured into the ring

  • The temperature of the ghee is closely monitored throughout the session

  • You may be guided to gently open and close the eyes for brief moments

  • After the allotted time, the ghee is safely removed and the eyes are gently cleansed

Following the session, rest is advised, and temporary sensitivity to light may be discussed.

Traditional Wellness Use (Ayurvedic Context)

From a traditional Ayurvedic perspective, Netra Basti is associated with:

  • Supporting relaxation of the eye area

  • Providing a soothing and cooling sensation

  • Encouraging a sense of comfort and ease

  • Promoting mindful rest for the eyes

Individual experiences may vary, and outcomes are not guaranteed.

Who May Consider Netra Basti?

Netra Basti may be suitable for individuals who:

  • Experience general eye tiredness from daily activities

  • Spend extended time using screens or reading

  • Are seeking a traditional Ayurvedic wellness therapy

  • Prefer gentle, non-invasive holistic care

Netra Basti is not suitable for everyone, which is why a consultation is required before booking.
