Every couple in the world dream about having a healthy progeny and consider that as a bliss. Infertility is failure to get pregnant after unprotected sexual intercourse for about an year. There is an other condition called sterility where individual cannot conceive for the life time. Sterility is an absolute condition where infertility is a relative term. According to statistics of the World Health organisation one in every four couples in developing countries had been effected by infertility. Infertility can be seen in both men and women and atleast one partner will be a reason for the condition.

Male Infertility

Reasons for  male Infertility:

The healthy hormonal environment and well formed genital organs in male produce healthy sperms. Any imbalance in these factors effect quantity and quality of sperm production. General health condition and lifestyle of a man affect his fertility chances. some common causes include

  • Lifestyle disorders like obesity, diabetes etc. which bring metabolic changes in body and effect the quality and quantity of sperm production
  • Stress may interfere with certain hormones which aid in sperm production.
  • Alcohol, drugs and smoking etc.
  • Nutritional deficiency of vitamins likesvit C, vit E , vit B complex and minerals like selenium and zinc etc.
  • Radiation with mobile phones, laptops, computers etc.
  • Environmental exposure to pollution, chemicals, etc.
  • Chromosomal defects.

All these factors disturbs the harmone condition there by effecting the libido and also sperm production. In male, a pair of genital organ called testes produce sperms which aid in fertility. Sperm count more than 15million / ml with 35 to 70 % motility is its normal range and chances of fertility will be on greater side. When the count is less than 15 million per ml it is referred to condition called oligospermia. When motility is less than 30%  it is asthenozoospermia, if there are any structural defects in the sperm it self Teratozoospermia. Absence of sperm cells is Azoospermia and complete lack of semen will be Aspermia.

Ayurveda about Male infertility :

Ayurveda discussed male infertility under chapter VAJIKARANA  in its  classical texts. The chapter deals well with reasons, types and management of male infertility. The causes for male infertility as per Ayurveda will be bijauthpathi (congenital abnormalities), sukra dosha (sperm defects), klaibya (loss of libido). Semen in males can be correlated to Sukra dhatu that stands at end of saptha dhatus which according to Ayurveda is produced at the end of all tissue metabolism and that also nourishes the entire body. Any imabalance in digestive fire disturbs the metabolism of entire Dhatu formation and there by effects sukra dhatu aslo.

Female Infertility

Every month one egg (ovum) is released from one ovary alternatively between 11th to 18th  day from the day of menstrual period. The ovum (egg) travels through the fallopian tubes, if a sperm meets the ovum at that place they unite and togetherly attach to the wall of uterus confirming the woman as conceived. Inability to get pregnant itself is infertility.

Reasons for Female infertility :

The hormonal environment in female called HPO axis , regular ovulatory menstrual cycles, healthy uterine cavity, patent fallopian tubes are the important factors for a woman to get pregnant. Disturbance in any one of these can lead to infertility or delay the chances to get pregnant. The most common disturbances can be ….

  • Anovulatory menstrual cycles
  • PCOD
  • Metabolic disorders like obesity, diabetes etc.
  • Stress-full lifestyle
  • Tubal blocks
  • Uterus structural abnormalities etc.

Ayurveda about Female infertility :

Infertility is wonderfully dealt in Ayurveda under the name VANDHYATWA. As per Ayurvedic classics infertility or vandhyatwa is the failure to achieve a child rather than getting conceived, as garbha srava ( abortions ) and mrutvasta ( still births ) are also included in types of infertility. Factors that help in getting pregnant are Rutu (fertile period), kshetra (reproductive organs ), Ambu (nutritive fluids ), beeja (ovum ) along with healthy psychological status norming function of humour vata (air element). Any abnormality in these factors can cause infertility.
